well maybe there's a perfect combination of heroes (what types?) and empires...
i think if you've got full house, 2/3 empires would be enough and 1 hero builder. The others can be freelancers and generals.

Sorry I'm in a public computer and I don't feel like logging in ^_^
Ok bored so I'll post some random strategies and tidbits.
Empires: Infantry profile is the best profile. Why? Because it doubles infantry's hp and increases their attack rate. Infantry are the best at defense and offense for most of the game. Someone might argue that towers are better for defense. I don't think so personally. Walls and towers are difficult to repair and remake when the enemy is in your base while you can pump out infantry at any time. You can't repair walls/towers during battle because the enemy will target your workers; the repair robot is very good at repairing but until imperial you're in a quandary if you need to repair during battle.
Infantry you can just sit them next to a hospital, and they have pretty good natural regen too. Infantry armor takes less damage from monsters, while structures take more from monsters, so there's a huge difference in durability when stalkers/elementals crash at your base. Infantry will survive, towers will not. Infantry also get much better during nearly every age, unlike towers which you have to wait several ages to upgrade.
Towers also require power at later ages, and teslas are very expensive to maintain/research. Trying to rebuild towers is a headache when the enemy nearly constantly attacks you, and becomes nearly impossible once they crack a few of them. Also items that drop on the floor make it annoying to build towers because it clogs everything up.
So, build infantry =)
Going with tanks/airplanes is a joke on higher difficulties unless you're willing to lose quite a few defenses or have a couple heroes guarding your base.
Heroes: go with builder, he's the best late game because he can forge level 15 equipment, while everyone else can only buy 11 equipment. General is the best early game, but the mercenaries are worthless in the castle. Freelancer is worthless if you're taking your time and levelling up a lot anyways.
Combinations -->
1 Hero + 1 empire is the best possible combination. Early on the hero is extremely vulnerable to death, which is where the empire comes in with towers (if you were daring enough to go with these) and/or infantry. Empires allow the hero to level up in peace without losing all of their lives. However after a few major battles the hero starts to become very strong and can manage the defense solo. At this point the empire can tech up to higher ages and/or give the hero some pay.
Some tricky specific strategies:
Warrior heroes can use taunt while running circles around the empire's defenses. This way almost nothing gets hurt.
Empires should place assassins in both trade bases as well as in corners of the map, so heroes can warp to them and buy/sell items or get far-off obelisks without having to walk super far.
Empires can make hospitals to heal heroes that can't build altars.
Other than that just make sure the heroes are using their skills correctly (healing spray on infantry, rain of fire on enemies, etc).

Very nice one, sadly enough for you next version changes alot in this. I will release it soon, infantry profile boosts only 50% now like all other profiles did. And couple other things.

finally another serious post. well its idd nice but squad always has to ruin things 4 us anyway, making ur acc only takes a few mins, ur story must have token... well... atleast an hour ;D

There is a place at the bottom of the map with 2 entrances and it has a lot of room to build in it. If there is a hero he can build a tower and it guards both sides that the creep can come in. The empire just needs to kill trees to and hero makes towers where the trees where. You need some aa if u build farms on the ledge or hero cnd build there. There is a small place to build power off to the right I think.
