Why not make empire classes just like heroes in addition to empire profiles. For instance
Agrarian (Night elf look) Economy: taxes Industry: Tree farmers (like wisps) Military: Gruerilla tactics or duelist (infantry maybe samurai/ninja type units)
Maritime (Human) Economy: Trading (floating gold mine with harvester trade ships) cannot build close to gold mine so multiple empires have to share 1. Industry: Chop trees Military: Ships and Airships (maybe old english and final fantasy style)
Nomadic (Orc) Economy: Plunder and to a smaller degree taxes Industry: Plunder and Tree farming Military: Fast moving units for hit and run (mongol calvary)

Tripling the number of custom units...i doubt squad will approve with his "Size does matter" tendencies to make the map as small as possible... "Industry: Plunder and Tree farming" Tree farming

Would size really be that bad since most of the models would have been built into Warcraft III

With regards to tree farming I was thinking along the lines of "one with the land" non-destructive and more efficient way of harvesting wood. Meaning some empires harvest would better other produce gold faster. Maritime empires would have to place units to guard thier trading stations (gold mines).
Orc have excellent models to be adapted to mongol style units. Night elf/Elf models look like duelist and stealth units. Human ships look excellent as traders and airships.
To reduce the number of units maybe you can make certain units upgrade automaticlly with "Age". Same system how you upgrade clerics and sorcerrors in the normal game.

well it might be an idea to make different Empire styles with each their own strenghts and weaknesses but that would take alot of work just to get some small differences in empire.

well believe me, making the map size bigger will give it alot more kb's. dont forget; the bigger the map, the more doodads/units/triggers

bigger map increases map kb size, true but most of the size comes from the models/sound/textures etc (imported stuff). Triggers dont make it really big because the compression on text is huge.

I wonder if it's doable to have more than 1 separate tech tree for empires without reaching the map size limit which I forgot.
