sounds bloodthirsty... anyway fletcher, we cant really say there's a current status since things keep changing, one week ago we were done with units, now we're like halfway on that new things keep coming up faster than we can work on it. and dont forget; me n squad still got a real life too, we cant work day and night on this but we're doing the best we can

you guys are re-making stuff as you go along or just filling in holes you realise there are in the tech tree? And another thing.. Is the hero system going to be more like beta 8.8.. cause I like how you actually chose your skills in that version.

yup that was nice wasnt it? but skills simply were overpowered and took too much space to get em in-game. now every hero has its standard skills.

I agree that skill picking was fun. I agree that some skills are difficult to balance. I agree that skills take up lots of room. I DO NOT agree that skills should not exist. Perhaps you can choose 1 skill to keep increasing. Lets say at level 2, so that you are not bombarded with too many menus so early on. This allows some customization, and since it is only one skill you can safely make it weak without making the entire hero weak. This should give some originality to things, as well as make every game different.(be a mage hero with crit, or a warrior with blizzard... it would make it interesting)
In other words: Keep some level of customizable skill, even if it is only a weak spell/proc.
Some reasonably weak ideas that could be implemented: This is based on the alleged max level of 50. -Critical Strike= 10+level/5% chance to deal 1+level/25x damage.(so that it scales up to 20% chance 3x. not overly powerful by any means)
-Bash= 10+level/5% chance to deal 5level extra damage and stun for 1 second.(up to 20% again, max damage is 250. 1 second because any scaling skill like this would be waaay too powerful by lvl 50)
-Chain lightning= (assuming 1 int=2 mana, this would need to be scaled according to this value) Mana cost of int/5, cooldown 6 seconds. damage is 20xlevel, bounce starts at 1 extra target and goes up every 10 levels(max 6 extra targets) and reduced damage is -40%, going down by 5 every 10 levels(max -15%). This skill's values would have to be modified greatly based upon what sort of hp/mp heroes have at various stages of the game. in HaE 1, stats increased exponentially(as long as u focused 1 skill), so if thats the case again then such skill would need to increase exponentially as well.
you get the picture. just make them have a reasonable effect on gameplay without changing the balance.(easier said than done)

if u give us such tabels (and be 100% its balanced) for 30 of those skills i think its doable... dont forget its really hard to balance alot of skills. i think we should start with the basics like we did in HaE1. the picking skills only came later in the beta's

When you vote for difficulty, I think it should display the difficulty chosen before you pick hero/empire. If it's gods play then I would certainly like to know so I don't pick a bad empire profile.
