It can be kinda hard to fully explain the black & white series, except that you play as a god (yes, a god) who must bring his civilization to power and rule the land of Eden. thats the basic principle, at least. The first game was pretty docile...
You'd end up crash-landing on the planet Eden via meteor or something, then you are manifest as a giant hand and a 'watchful eye'. The villagers wisely begin worshipping you as their deity. In later levels, you will learn the fundamentals of godliness, like converting other settlements, waging war against other gods, and casting miracles (spells); although i would hardly call a gigantic bolt of pure energy from the sky that incinerates whatever it touches a 'miracle'. more like a curse. ah well. you also get a Creature to serve as your avatar in the world, who can be one of roughly 12 types of animal, from ape to cow to rhino to tiger.
the second game took on a much more warlike role. unlike the first game, where you didn't conquer other settlements using massed ranks of spear-waving militiamen, you needed to do impressive things there to convince the villagers to worship you. things like calling up your huge tiger creature to impress the villagers with his break dance moves and majestic spellcasting feats.
But now, technology has come to eden. With technology, weaponry. With weaponry, war. With war, power. Now you draft your villagers into armies to rule the land of Eden with an iron fist. The expansion of B&W2 is even better; more spells, more options, better combat AI, more buildings, just plain awesomeness. and you get to fight a black-metal voice undead god who is really, really strong. i tried to attack his capital and got lava miracles thrown on top of the hill i was charging up, the lava swooped down and annihilated my troops. And instead of converting settlements, now your creature can stomp them. Hard.
So, the B&W series brings about the core of god gaming. takes a lot of micromanagement, but its fun to be able to do almost anything in the game; throw your villagers, throw rocks at your villagers, throw fireballs at the rocks to set them on fire then throw them at your villagers, you name it. you might have to do a little searching to find the first game however, as its not out anymore that i know of. two thumbs up!

and you can also cast Epic miracles. You could call up a Siren to entice enemy troops to your cause, a Hurricane to devastate their cities, or likewise an Earthquake to swallow up their buildings and walls. And you gotta love throwing Volcano on them ;D

well both games are good in their own right but B&W2 just seems rushed. The city building is nice, but the military thing isn't very well thought out. Basically all you have is walls, better walls, swordsmen, archers, catapults and a big furry tank (your Creature). Really would have been great to include skirmish and multiplayer modes in it, but the combat would be very short as all your enemy would have to do is throw a lava miracle on top of that hill your troops are charging up to kill all your troops.
To put it simply, if the people at Lionhead Studios want to really make B&W a good war game, they need to think about the military angle. human soldiers versus a god? lol
