As an Empire, i've been looking for AGES for a good defensive area, and I think i've finally found just the place. I didn't take a screenshot, but there is a place close to the center of the map that can be THE best defensive location, if you're good enough...
Its got high ground, small landbridges (excellent choke points), a ditch K man's goons have to go into before going up the main ramp into the small area... its unbeatable.
Wall off the main ramp (but dont put towers there!), build as many guard towers as possible on the central hill, back them with a few Catapults or other long-range stuff, and place a line of combust towers at the edge of the cliff opposite the guard towers. Cover the combust towers with troops, and you have an unbeatable defense.
Reasons why.
1 ) They might like to attack the main ramp's wall, but when they start getting shot at by the towers and the catapults on the central hill, they tend to go for them instead of the wall (unless you put towers on the other side)
2 ) The guard towers tear the non-hero enemy units to shreds. ;D
3 ) The line of combust towers, completely out of reach (except if Dusaq or siege weapons are around), rips through any enemy heroes that come by.
4 ) If they get to your combust towers, your troops can make mincemeat out of them, as weakened as they should be.
Wall off the one other ramp behind the combust tower line, and your all set and safe to build!
I'm new to the forums here, but as soon as I figure out how to attach screenshots to messages, ill post the defense layout here.
:::WARNING:::
Remember, constantly update the defenses. Tier 1 watch towers are no good against 3000 HP heroes, but Imperial Guard Towers do well. Remember, if you're not constantly upgrading, the enemy sure is!
Further notes :
You can protect the combust towers from troops seeking to get across the small landbridge by walling it off.
If you EVER get the chance to research Precision, DO IT. The extra range comes in very handy and can let the towers on the central hill reach enemies in front of the main gate without needing a siege weapon. You won't see precision appear in the research list very often, so take every opportunity to get it.
Once you get to the Renaissance age, pop out some Zepplins and build towers and camp fires up on the cliffs. Turn 'em into cannons and anti-air emplacements when possible.
Speaking of cannons, build a pack of them when you get the chance. There is a small pass just southeast of the Combust Tower line area. Pack the cannons on the hill so they can guard that pass (this might not be a good idea, considering how it tends to make the enemy take a totally different route from the one intended).
Building in this area does have one obvious con; severe land crunch. You won't find very much space for farms and power plants, although the area is still large enough to support several buildings and still leave room for houses. I'd recommend either researching Grain Farming to an acceptable level and keeping rations low, or taking some workers to a safe, large area and build farms and power plants there instead. Otherwise, you're almost stuck with only about 10 farms and solar power. It is very dangerous to try building Nuclear or Fusion power plants here, because of the land crunch and the fact that the plants explode when killed.
((MODIFICATION))
I just played one more game and found the places exact location. It is directly north of the empire starting area. Look for landbridges that connect cliffs. I took a screenshot of the defensive layout, but im still trying to figure out how to put it in here...
btw if this was helpful, please let me know.
