While i dont know for sure, i think royce was referring to times when i've hired him 100% or the other way round. In games where i hire for a lot, i barely even build any defense. 1 row of walls with 1 gate is enough to screw with creep pathing to make them not want to go that way. Leave one open spot at a different base entrance and they will prefer to go there, even if its way out of their way. this way you can sort of wrap your towers in walls to stop melee damagers, but still bring the enemies to your base. For how i usually build a base, this means i spend 1/3rd as much on towers as if i were to tower every entrance. In other words, building smart defense is better than building expensive defense. Oh and i'm pretty sure that a gate not only costs much more but even has ~75% hp of a wall. If you really want 2+rows of wall, then put them like this...
(Empire) XXXXXXGXXXX XXXXXXGXXXX (empty row) XXXXXXGXXXX (Wilderness)
so that you can repair the front two lines with workers in that empty space, and still have that second layer behind just in case things go wrong. Maybe mixing a few towers into that 2-deep set of wall would be even more space-effective.

Personally, I just use: [X = Wall T = Tower G = Gate]
XXXGXXX _TT_TT_ _TT_TT_
Works are able to repair the entire structure, and there's no need to open gates. Only problem is when heroes decide to start a "defend the children" quest and run away, meaning I (or another player) has to deal with 10x as many creeps as normal.
Also, about the "newb empires" (another topic, I'm too lazy to make 2 posts) - I always play in a spot that attracts the CPU creeps/heroes. This way I always know what direction they'll attack in, and the other players can build in relative peace. Which isn't to say I support low difficulties (hell, I always vote God's Play) but want to see just how far I can survive alone.
(My motto: A good empire needs no heroes.)
Also - at level 800 it was still impossible for my Necromancer to solo Kalenden, on difficulty Average. Every time I made it to Kal, the Death Knight attacked me and OHKO'd me with his Death Coil if I ran out of mana (which happened fast when fighting Kal & Co.)

They spot that i play has 2 openings which looks like.
XXXXXXXXX LAND WOOT XGGX TT TT TT T
The creep only attack the wall where the tower becuase they towers pull them to the wall and becuase they can get in they have to attack that wall which is the closest to the tower.
Yes, Necromancer sucks! in late game. But is very good in the start Kal can just 1 hit the helpers and then you lose alot of your dps and then he summon his 2 people and they just own u to hell.
