NOTE: This article contains some sensitive information, for lack of a better term. I may be forced to remove it at some point for whatever reason, so read up while you can.
Greetings, I am a shaman from Clan GoED here to share with you a few insights about this new protocol that Blizzard put into effect recently.
As some of you know, Blizzard activated a program -- more like spyware -- that is supposed to serve an anti-cheat function, disallowing the use of maphacks and the like. The problem is that it also disallows the use of other third party programs, such as Auto-Refreshers, Bots, Banlists and Listcheckers, all programs that most people on battle.net use regularly to make hosting funner, easier and simpler.
All this has changed with the implementation of the Warden. Now, if you try to use an external third party program, you will be disconnected because of the Warden. Be warned; apparently, this here...
www.blizzard.com/us/legal/tou.html
states that use of third party programs was forbidden to begin with, or maybe that's a new line they put into the license agreement. Its near the beginning. You could be into some kind of legal bind if you don't obey this cockeyed law.
Now we get down to effects. Since there are hundreds, even thousands of people playing on Warcraft 3 every day who use third party programs, and that their use has recently been discontinued, Blizzard has practically just cut its own throat -- there will be waterfalls of complaints, lawsuits, you name it.
Oh, but that's not even the best part. Apparently, another Shaman by the name of Emperor_Sidious told me that The Warden program can actually scan your RAM. This was mentioned in the legal concerns section of a wikipedia article;
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warden_(software)
This can conceivably allow whoever controls the Warden to view your RAM, and in so doing other private data stored on said RAM. That pretty much nails it down to becoming another piece of Spyware. This is bound to become a very serious issue later on, but now its just the beginning. I ask you all to be very careful at this point, and turn off all your third party programs before playing on Warcraft 3 from now until Blizzard hopefully dissolves this stupid Warden program.
There's some rumors going around though, some people are finding ways to block the Warden, because essentially the Warden is a big piece of Spyware, and therein lies the secret. Some people can still work their programs i guess, i've seen games up with LC and autorefreshers are still functioning for some people. Enjoy it while you can.
If any of this information turns out to be false, let me know.
